Barquisimeto was founded in 1552 by Juan de Villegas, as a mission and military colony. It is named after the local Amerindian tribe Bariquísima. The city's cathedral is an example of colonial architecture from the mid-18th century, which has been declared a national monument. The city hosts some of Venezuela's oldest churches and civil buildings in Baroque style such as its Municipal Palace (1770) or San Francisco Church (1687).
