It is a major hub for flights between North America and South America; as well as between Central and South American cities. In 2009, it handled over 8 million passengers with an average of 25 thousand operations per week from all airlines combined. The second-largest airport serving Caracas is El Libertador Air Base (Base Aérea de El Libertador). This military airbase has been used extensively by Viasa for their domestic services within Venezuela since 1947.
