About Spooner
The city is located in the Chequamegon National Forest, and is a popular tourist destination. The city's economy relies heavily on tourism during the summer months, when visitors come to enjoy its lakes and rivers. In winter it serves as a gateway for cross-country skiers who use the city's network of groomed trails through town and into surrounding county forests. Spooner was founded by William Dickey Spooner (1833–1915), an English immigrant from Yorkshire who came to Wisconsin in 1855 at age 22 after having worked as an apprentice shoemaker with his father back home for five years prior to emigrating.
