Rhinelander is part of the Rhinelander-Oneida, WI Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city was named for Johnathan Rhinelander Jones, a land speculator and early investor in the lumber industry. The name "Rhinelander" first appeared on maps in 1849 when J. Rheinlander Jones built his home there; it was incorporated as a village on March 6, 1851 by an act of the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature and became a city after Wisconsin statehood in 1848 (the legislature had to pass another bill to make this change). It has been noted for having one of only two remaining Carnegie libraries designed by architect Andrew Carnegie himself; it opened its doors November 1, 1909 with Miss Mary Etta Brown as librarian. In addition to being listed individually on both National Register of Historic Places listings within Oneida County and State Register listings within Wisconsin since 1985,[2] it is also included as part of historic districts designated locally.
