Port Washington's harbor was dredged in 1871 by crews working for the U.S Federal Government; it was intended as an artificial harbor for commercial shipping on Lake Michigan and remains one today although it no longer serves any commercial traffic or large vessels due to its shallow depth (approximately 12 feet) and lack of navigational aids such as buoys or lights marking channel markers within its limits .
