Martinsburg was named for Thomas Martin, a soldier during the American Revolutionary War. The city's population grew by more than 40 percent between 2000 and 2010, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in West Virginia. The city is home to two institutions of higher education: Eastern West Virginia Community College (EWVCC) and Shepherd University (SU). SU also has a satellite location in Martinsburg at Harpers Ferry Center on its campus located just across the Potomac River from Washington D.C.. Both schools are within an easy commute to Frederick County Public Schools as well as other school districts that serve students living in Berkeley County including Jefferson High School which serves Martinsburg City residents; Hedgesville High School; Falling Waters Junior/Senior High School; Hedgesville Middle School and Falling Waters Elementary school all serve Martinsburg City residents while Jefferson Middle/High serves those who live outside of town but still reside within Berkeley county boundaries .
