Morgantown is the principal city of the Morgantown, WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2017, the MSA had a population of 234,922. The name "Morgantown" is derived from Morgan's town or Fort Morgan (named for Daniel Morgan), which was named after Revolutionary War hero Colonel Johnathan (Johann) Morgan; and "town", a common ending for many place names in Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The presence of several large warehouses to store tobacco as well as lumber positioned Morgantown to become an early center for trade in western Maryland and eastern West Virginia.
