The Spokane metropolitan area, also known as Greater Spokane or the Inland Northwest, is a metropolitan area in eastern Washington that includes the city of Spokane and ten surrounding counties. The Office of Management and Budget defines the region as comprising all of Lincoln County, Stevens County, Pend Oreille County (which contains Newport), Ferry County (which contains Republic), part of Whitman county including Pullman but not Moscow which is included in another CSA with Lewiston Idaho Metropolitan Statistical Area; plus Asotin county to include Clarkston. The United States Census Bureau defines it as consisting solely of Stevens and Pend Oreille Counties. It has been designated by several publications as one of America's most livable regions due to its high quality health care facilities such as Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverpoint Campus; Gonzaga University; Whitworth University - ranked among "America's Top Colleges" by Forbes magazine for 16 consecutive years through 2016 - along with other institutions such as Eastern Washington University located in Cheney WA., Blue Mountain Community College located near Walla Walla WA., Columbia Basin College located near Pasco WA.
