The city is also home to the Kitsap County Fairgrounds, which hosts many events throughout the year. Poulsbo was officially incorporated on October 31, 1890. The name of Poulsbo comes from a small Norwegian town called Polserbø that Jørgen Eliason passed through in 1881 while traveling by boat from Wisconsin to Washington Territory; he liked it so much that he decided to give his new town a similar name. He later wrote: "I wanted some good old Norse name and Polsboro (sic) fit exactly into my plans." There are several other towns named Poulsbo around the world including one in Norway and another in Sweden near Stockholm; both were founded by Norwegians who had emigrated there after first settling at Poulsbo, WA (the Swedish village's original spelling was "Polsbö", but has since been changed).
