Hansville is the location of Naval Base Kitsap, a U.S. Navy base that includes Naval Submarine Base Bangor and part of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. Hansville was named for Hans Hansen (1834–1902), an early Norwegian settler who arrived in Washington Territory in 1864.[2] He homesteaded 160 acres (65 ha) at the head of Port Madison Bay near present-day Poulsbo.[3] In 1892, he sold his land to John Wicks, who platted it as a townsite called "Wicksburg". The name did not stick; by 1895 it had been changed to "Hansville".[4][5][6] A post office with this spelling opened on August 1, 1896,[7] but closed again on October 31 when its mail service was transferred to Poulsbo.
