The city of Gig Harbor is located on the shores of Puget Sound, at (47.246052, -122.556827). It is bordered by the cities of Tacoma and Ruston to the south and east respectively; Key Peninsula to its west across Admiralty Inlet; and McNeil Island in Pierce County to its north across Rich Passage. According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of 9.7 square miles (25 km2), all land with no water areas within city limits or shoreline on Puget Sound itself.[4] The highest point in Gig Harbor lies directly north at 1120 feet above sea level.[5] Gig Harbor's climate can be classified as either humid continental or oceanic depending upon whether monthly temperatures average below 50 °F (10 °C) for five consecutive months out of an annual cycle,[6][7][8] although this distinction does not have much practical application given that both types experience similar weather patterns from month-to-month during most years[9].
