The city of Gig Harbor is located on the shores of Puget Sound, at (47.246052, -122.556827). It is bordered by the cities of Tacoma and Ruston to the south and east respectively; Key Peninsula to its west across Admiralty Inlet; and McNeil Island in Pierce County to its north across Rich Passage. According to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of 9.7 square miles (25 km2), all land with no water areas within city limits or shoreline on Puget Sound itself. The highest point in Gig Harbor lies directly north at 1120 feet above sea level. Gig Harbor's climate can be classified as either humid continental or oceanic depending upon whether monthly temperatures average below 50 °F (10 °C) for five consecutive months out of an annual cycle, although this distinction does not have much practical application given that both types experience similar weather patterns from month-to-month during most years.
