The lahar is buried under a layer of more recent glacial till, which has been extensively mined for its sand and gravel. The city was incorporated on April 21, 1997. Enumclaw's economy is based on agriculture (especially fruit), lumber production and distribution, the US Army Reserve Center at nearby Fort Lewis (Joint Base Lewis-McChord), light manufacturing/distribution centers in the area as well as retail trade centered around its historic downtown core. Enumclaw High School is a public high school located in Enumclaw, Washington serving grades 9–12 with an enrollment of approximately 1,200 students annually.[2] It serves all or portions of unincorporated King County including Black Diamond,[3] Brier,[4] Buckley[5], Covington[6], Maple Valley,[7][8][9][10] North Bend[11], Orting [12]. The school colors are blue and gold; the mascot is an eagle named "Eagle". EHS competes in WIAA class 4A athletics.[13].
