In 2008, Virginia Beach became one of only three cities in the United States to have a population within a city limits (the other two being St. Louis and New Orleans) surpass 400,000 residents; it was joined by Jacksonville, Florida as one of two metropolitan areas that had populations exceeding 1 million residents within their city limits that year; both metros surpassed 1 million around 2012 or 2013. Virginia Beach is well known for its wide array of outdoor recreational activities including beaches such as Oceanfront and Back Bay which are frequented by tourists from across Hampton Roads and beyond during summer months when temperatures can reach over . The area's warm subtropical climate brings beachgoers throughout much if not all seasons with an average high temperature near every month from late April until late October between 70–80 °F (21–27 °C).
