The town was named after William Boykin, a local resident. Boykins is located at (36.858963, -77.939056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.5 km²), all land-based on top of an ancient riverbed that runs through it and empties into nearby Mobjack Bay via several small creeks and streams which are fed by freshwater springs from underground aquifers in the surrounding area.. The elevation is approximately 50 feet above sea level at its highest point near Uppards Road where it intersects with Route 643 just outside its border to the north; however most areas within town limits are much lower than this due to being situated along or below sea level as well as having been built upon for hundreds of years prior to modern construction standards being implemented in building codes across Virginia during recent decades since 2000 A new elementary school was recently constructed on property donated by Mr & Mrs James E Hargrove Sr.
