Swanton is located in the northwest corner of Franklin County, bordered by both Lamoille and Addison counties. The town center is in the valley of Otter Creek, a south-flowing tributary of the Missisquoi River. Vermont Route 105 runs through Swanton village, leading north to Interstate 89 at St. Albans and south to U.S. 2 near Highgate Springs at Lake Champlain; I-89 leads east across Lake Champlain to Burlington and west overland into New York State as part of Interstate 87 (the Adirondack Northway). Vermont Route 74 crosses Otter Creek from Stannard Mountain Road on its way northward along that ridge line; it leads southeast down East Hill into Richford then southwest via West Hill Road toward South Londonderry Township in neighboring Windham County.[3] According to the United States Census Bureau, Swanton has a total area of 35 square miles (91 km2), all land.
