The first settlers in the Syracuse area were James and Eliza Clark, who moved their family to the banks of Goose Creek in 1852. The Clarks raised cattle and horses on a small farm just south of present-day Syracuse. Other families settled nearby, including the Snyders (1854), Hardys (1855), Dusenberrys (1856) and Harpers (c. 1860). In 1862, Peter Maughan arrived with his family from Tooele County; they became among the first permanent settlers when they built a log cabin near present-day Maughan Avenue between State Street and 21st Street South.
