The Salt Lake City metropolitan area is the largest in Utah, and the city itself has developed a large outdoor recreation tourist industry based on skiing, and hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics. The city was originally named "Great Salt Lake City" because of its location directly south of Great Salt Lake (the word "great" was dropped from its name in 1868). It was traversed by the Lincoln Highway, during which time it attracted numerous tourists. Today it is known for its political conservatism and as a center of aviation; however, despite these things it still attracts many tourists every year to visit Temple Square or attend events at EnergySolutions Arena or Vivint Smart Home Arena.
