The town is located on the Colorado River, just north of Arches National Park and east of Canyonlands National Park. It has been nicknamed "Supercross Capital of the World" because it is a favorite destination for off-road racers. The area was long inhabited by the Ute people and early settlers included cowboys and miners. Moab was one end point of the Pony Express as well as a stopover for travelers along the First Transcontinental Railroad that completed in 1869; today it serves as an important regional center for tourism, trade, transportation (primarily due to its proximity to several major highways), mining/energy extraction, agriculture (primarily ranching) and recreation including four-wheeling along with other outdoor activities such as hiking/backpacking in nearby canyons or mountains within or adjacent to public lands such as Arches National Park or Canyonlands National Park; rock climbing at numerous locations both inside Moab city limits (e.g., Mill Creek) & outside city limits within close proximity e.g.
