Temple was founded as a town in 1881, and became a city on November 24, 1884. The town's economy was based on agriculture and livestock until the 1940s when the North Texas region was selected as one of several locations for war-related manufacturing plants by Henry J. Kaiser to support World War II efforts. In addition to its medical community (Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple), today the city is served by two interstate highways: I-35W from north of Belton through Killeen connecting with I-35E at Hillsboro; and US 190 from west of Gholson connecting with SH 195 at Belton then southward into Austin before continuing eastward toward Houston along Interstate 10 via Bryan/College Station.
