The name is derived from "plata" (Spanish for "silver") and "planos" (meaning level plains), which the Spanish gave to a creek where they found silver in 1841. Plano was founded as the site of a railroad junction, and developed rapidly as Dallas's northern suburbs. It has several corporate headquarters: Frito-Lay North America, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, JCPenney, Kroger and Whole Foods Market are all headquartered there; Addison Airport is located within city limits; Toyota Motor Sales USA moved its headquarters to Plano in 2013.[5] The city hosts many local events including the Plano Balloon Festival,[6] Blues on Main Street[7], Downtown Dazzle,[8] Taste of Collin County[9][10], Dragon Boat Festival,[11][12][13][14] Great Texas Mosquito Festival[15], International Festivals & Events Association Conference & Marketplace [16]. In October 2006 CNN/Money magazine listed Plano as one of the top 100 places to live in America.
