Fort Worth, Texas: History Main article: History of Fort Worth, Texas See also: Timeline of Fort Worth history and Timeline of Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex historySee also: Historic sites in Tarrant County (Texas) and List of mayors in the United States by time in officeThe first inhabitants were Native Americans who lived during the late Pleistocene (Ice Age), such as the Clovis culture. Since this period, humans have been frequenting local resources including springs and rivers. In 1843 a group of American settlers established Ross's Landing on a bluff overlooking Trinity River where it flows into the West Fork; its waters reached their present level that year due to heavy rains further south along Red River. The river had already been an important transportation route for earlier cultures; its low banks made it difficult for steamboats to navigate farther north than Fort Gibson (Oklahoma).
