Since this period, humans have been frequenting local resources including springs and rivers. In 1843 a group of American settlers established Ross's Landing on a bluff overlooking Trinity River where it flows into the West Fork; its waters reached their present level that year due to heavy rains further south along Red River. The river had already been an important transportation route for earlier cultures; its low banks made it difficult for steamboats to navigate farther north than Fort Gibson (Oklahoma).
