About Denton

Denton is home to the University of North Texas at Dallas, the oldest institution of higher education in Texas. The school's origins date back to 1891 when North Texas was still a part of Denton County and known as "North Seminary". In 1913, it became one of the four original branches (or campuses) that made up what is now known as The University of North Texas system. It began with 82 students and 6 faculty members; by 2014 enrollment had grown to over 23,000 students spread across all campuses within Denton city limits (including UNT-Dallas). The university has been ranked first among public institutions for undergraduate teaching in each year since 1997 according to U.S News & World Report rankings. Its graduate programs have also been ranked among top 50 public universities by U.S News & World Report every year since 1996 except for 2002 when they were tied with two other schools at number 51; its business program has also consistently placed within top 20 nationally over same period according to Bloomberg Businessweek rankings .
