The city's prominence arose from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, and its position along numerous railroad lines. The bulk of the city is in Dallas County, of which it is the county seat; however, sections of the city are located in Collin , Denton , Kaufman , and Rockwall counties. According to one popular definition accepted by both locals and outsiders alike, "Dallas" refers to anything within Dallas County without regard for administrative boundaries (though this has been disputed). Residents of cities such as Grand Prairie may also refer to their area as "Dallas", though many residents distinguish between "Downtown" (meaning Central Business District) or other parts of town versus areas outside downtown. The name ""Dallas"" comes from dá lùs or dà lùs (), Scottish Gaelic: [ˈd̪ˠaːləs] () meaning 'oak grove'. It was named after Stephen F. Austin's plantation homeplace at Mavilla during his brief 1821 visit.
