Amarillo is home to several colleges and universities. Among these are Amarillo College, one of the first public community colleges in Texas; Amarillo Higher Education Center with branch campuses of West Texas A&M University and Wayland Baptist University; Palo Duro Community College, a two-year college that offers an associate degree program as well as vocational training programs for high school students through its Adult High School Program (AHS); Western Texas College (WTC), which has three campuses in the city including its main campus at Amarillo High School's former location on Polk Street; St. Mary's Catholic Newman Center (affiliated with the Archdiocese of San Antonio) located on North Washington Street near downtown serves over 1,000 students each year from across West Texas who attend classes at both WTC locations or online via video conferencing technology provided by Cisco Systems Inc.; and South Plains College also has a presence in Amarillo offering adult education courses to residents.
