Lebanon is home to Cumberland University, a small liberal arts college. Lebanon was founded in 1807 as the first capital of the Tennessee Territory. A center of early 19th century industry and commerce in Middle Tennessee, Lebanon has continued its development into an urban area serving Nashville and beyond with retail, medical facilities, educational institutions (including two colleges), industrial sites (including Nissan North America's largest assembly plant) and entertainment venues including a movie theater complex that features IMAX screens. The city has been home to several noteworthy musicians including country music singer Jimmy C.
