The city hosts several cultural events, including the Southern Writers Series, a three-day celebration of literature featuring prominent authors such as James Lee Burke and Andrew Lytle. Knoxville is also home to the annual World's Fair in September. The first people to form substantial settlements in what is now Knoxville arrived during the Woodland period (c. 1000 BC – AD 1000). One of the oldest artificial structures in Knoxville are burial mounds built by Native Americans known as Hopewell Indians near present-day Marymeade Avenue; these date from 200–400 AD.[12] The "Knoxville" name itself ultimately derives from the historic Shawnee leader who was named after an earlier resident,[13] Chief Black Fox—whose name may have come from either his dark fur or his reputation for cunning and diplomacy.[14][15][16] During this time, Fort Loudoun was constructed at nearby Chilhowee Park[17], serving as a trading post between Europeans and Native Americans.
