Johnson City is named for John Johnson, a pioneer settler. The city has a mayor-council form of government. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the city of Johnson City with Washington County for statistical purposes into the Johnson City Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had an estimated 2015 population of 200,966 and is part of the larger Tennessee Valley region (comprising parts or all counties in Alabama and Tennessee). In 2016 "Forbes" magazine ranked Johnson City as one such example: "America's Coolest Small Cities".
