It is included in the Florence, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. Henning was founded by German immigrants in 1839 and named for a prominent citizen of the time. The town's economy was based on farming, lumbering and cotton processing until after World War II when it became more diversified with several manufacturing plants located there including a plant owned by International Paper Company (IPC) which employed over 400 people at its peak operation. IPC closed this facility around 2003 due to declining demand for newsprint paper products resulting from competition from other countries where labor costs are much lower than those found in America today such as China or India.
