Greeneville is located at 36°10′52″N 82°50′18″W (36.172612, -82.835330).The town is situated atop a plateau in the Appalachian Mountains known as the South Toe River Valley, which lies between two mountain ridges: Bays Mountain to the west and Brushy Mountain to the east. The valley was originally occupied by an arm of Cherokee Lake , which was drained in 1838 during construction of a railroad tunnel through Bays Mountain . The lake's former bed forms Flat Creek Falls Lake just north of Greeneville proper; it drains into Cove Creek , whose confluence with Fall Branch (a tributary of Middle Fork Holston River ) forms Fort Patrick Henry Reservoir on its way southward toward Kingsport and Johnson City . Greeneville sits along U.S Route 11E/U.S Route 23A/Tennessee State Highway 91 Bypass, which connects it with Interstate 81 about 10 miles northeast via US-23A or I-81 Exit 22 near Bluff City Tennessee ).
