Knoxville is located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, a sub-range of the Appalachian Mountains. The city has a total area of 105.0 square miles (272 km2), all land. Knoxville's elevation ranges from 875 feet (267 m) above sea level on its lowest boundary to 1,160 feet (354 m) at its highest point along 4th Avenue in West Knoxville. The city's primary waterway is Fort Loudoun Lake, which flows into Tennessee River nearby. The lake provides opportunities for boating and fishing; however it also poses challenges to public health due to algae blooms that form periodically and result from elevated levels phosphorus from residential lawns and animal waste runoff.
