The city has its own typeface, Chatype, which was launched in August 2012. The first inhabitants of the Chattanooga area were Native Americans. The Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park preserves the sites of two major Civil War battles: Missionary Ridge (September 22–25, 1863) and Lookout Mountain (November 23–24). These battles were fought between Braxton Bragg's Confederate army from Tennessee and Union forces commanded by Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans from Ohio; they had engaged at Murfreesboro in December 1862 before moving to this strategic location for a siege that lasted until Bragg retreated on September 8 after his defeat at the Battle of Chickamauga Creek on September 19–20 near LaFayette Georgia .
