The city is home to the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame. The museum was founded in 1998 by Michael G. "Mike" Sonksen, a former professional motorcycle racer who raced for the Harley-Davidson factory racing team from 1979 through 1986, winning five Grand National races (now known as Monster Energy AMA Supercross). He also won two consecutive Daytona 200 victories in 1981 and 1982. In addition to his racing career he has been inducted into numerous halls of fame including: The American Motorcyclist Association's Hall Of Fame; International Motorsports Hall Of Fame; Wisconsin Bike Racing Association's Legends Of Dirt Track Racing; Minnesota Off Road Riders' Trailblazers & Pioneers hall of fame ; South Dakota Off Road Vehicle Association’s Outlaw class hall of fame ; Minnesota State High School League’s All Sports Wall Of Honor ,and most recently Mike was inducted into the prestigious Sturgis Motorcycle Museum And Hall Of Fame .
