The city of Myrtle Beach is a principal city of the Grand Strand metropolitan area, which has a population exceeding 500,000. It is also one of the four main cities that make up the Wilmington-Conway-North Myrtle Beach combined statistical area (CSA), which has a population exceeding 800,000. The CSA includes additional areas in Horry and Georgetown counties as well as an eastern portion of Brunswick County in North Carolina. As defined by the United States Census Bureau, "Myrtle Beach" includes all communities along U.S Route 17 from its southern terminus at Interstate 95 to its northern terminus at Socastee; it does not include any other incorporated municipalities within Horry County or unincorporated communities within those townships such as Longs and Socastee itself (which are counted separately).
