The Heritage has been played since 1978, and in 2007 had the highest attendance of any tournament on the PGA Tour outside of major championships. The event brings a significant amount of money to the island and surrounding area each year, with an estimated $40 million having been spent by visitors over three days in 2007. It is bordered to the west by Port Royal Sound and to the east by Broad Creek; both waterways are part of Beaufort County's Intracoastal Waterway system which links Hilton Head Island with other barrier islands including Daufuskie Island across Port Royal Sound on one side and Hunting Island State Park across Broad Creek on another side as well as St Helena Islands (St James & St John) further south via Colleton River/May River estuary system that flows into Charleston Harbor near Mount Pleasant SC .
