Charleston is also known for its historic architecture and preserved colonial era neighborhood. The city has many examples of Colonial, Greek Revival, and Federal architecture; it has one of the largest collections in the country. The Citadel (also known as The Military College of South Carolina) is a state-supported military college located in Charleston, South Carolina. It was founded in 1842 on the site of an earlier arsenal named "Charleston Arsenal" by Colonel William Lamb as "The Arsenal Academy." In 1854 the state granted it land upon which to build its main campus on Hampton Park Terrace overlooking Hampton Park; this tract forms part of today's Fort Sumter National Monument area at Morris Island where Confederate forces fired upon US federal troops during 1861–1865 American Civil War (the first shots were fired from nearby Fort Johnson).
