The borough is bordered to the northeast by the Mason–Dixon line, separating Pennsylvania and Maryland, and thus it is sometimes referred to as "Pennsylvania's Southernmost Borough." The borough of State College has grown with the expanding university and Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The University Park campus of Penn State makes up over half of the land area of the entire borough; however, much development has occurred in other areas within both Centre County (eastern half) and Clearfield County (western portion). State College is a college town, dominated economically by the presence of Penn State University which contributes approximately $3 billion annually to its economy. Over 10 percent ($8 billion) or one-third (33%) was attributed directly from student spending including tuition payments while another 50% comes indirectly through businesses that serve students such as restaurants or retail stores.
