The borough was named after the plum trees found growing there in its early history.Plum is home to a large Italian-American population and is known for its Italian restaurants, grocers, bakeries, and social clubs. Plum also has a significant Polish American population as well as many African Americans who have been living in the area since the Great Migration of 1910–1940. The first African American family arrived around 1815; by 1870 there were about 100 black residents who mostly worked on farms or in trades such as barbershops or shoemakers. The borough's current mayor is Democrat Tom Guzzo (since 2015).
