The Pittsburgh metropolitan area is the largest in both the Ohio Valley and Appalachia, and second-largest in Pennsylvania. It includes parts of two states (Pennsylvania and West Virginia) as well as a small part of one other state (Ohio). The 2010 Census placed the total population at 2,362,936. The combined statistical area adds over 2 million people more than 20% to Pittsburgh's population—bringing it to 4.2 million residents—making it "the 16th-largest Combined Statistical Area in the United States". The city has three major sections: Downtown (), Oakland () with many neighborhoods such as Squirrel Hill (), Shadyside (), Point Breeze () or South Side Flats; and finally outlying areas such as Ross Township (). Many suburbs are located adjacent to these neighborhoods including: Mt Washington (); Green Tree (); Carrick (); Castle Shannon (); Baldwin Borough/Mt Lebanon/Whitehall etc.
