The Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most important battles in the American Civil War (1861–1865), was fought July 1–3, 1863. The Union and Confederate armies met on this town's battlefield; about 7,800 men were killed or wounded over three days. On November 19, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln delivered his famous "Gettysburg Address" at a dedication ceremony for a new national cemetery being constructed here to bury some 3200 dead from both sides who had fallen during the battle.
