Erie County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 270,876. Its county seat is Erie. The county was created in 1800 and later organized in 1803.Erie County comprises the Erie, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.




Erie County Pennsylvania was formed on March 12, 1800 from part of Allegheny County. It was named for the Erie tribe of Native Americans who lived along its southern border. The county seat is Erie (founded in 1798).
