About Erie
Erie is north of Buffalo and southwest of Cleveland. Erie is the principal city in the Erie, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Erie County (2000 population: 538,584). The city serves as a gateway to Presque Isle State Park; it also hosts a number of festivals including the annual JazzFest at Peake Plaza and National Hamburger Festival. The region had been long inhabited by various cultures of indigenous peoples. In historic times, they were known collectively as "the Iroquoian-speaking people". They occupied territory along Lake Ontario's southern shoreline from Rochester to Niagara Falls.
