The Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1–3, 1863, in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The battle with a large number of casualties on both sides resulted in a victory for the Union Army under General George Meade against attacks by Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War (1861–65). After his success at Chancellorsville in May 1863, Lee led his army through the Shenandoah Valley to begin his second invasion into Northern territory; he sought to engage and defeat Meade's army before it could be reinforced by troops from Washington D.C.
