Corvallis is home to Oregon State University, a large producer of agricultural products. In 2010, the city was listed by "BusinessWeek" as one of the best places in the world to raise a child. The surrounding area is also known for its many other universities (see Corvallis metropolitan area). This region experiences warm (but not hot) and dry summers, with no average monthly temperatures above 71.6 °F (22 °C). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Corvallis has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate , abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps . It is surrounded by mountains: Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson to the east; both are visible from almost all parts of town. There are also several lakes nearby including Lake Simtustus , an artificial lake created in 1964 by damming Marys River which runs through downtown Corvallis into Benton Lake at OSU's West Campus; Alsea Falls Dam ; and Dexter Reservoir .
