The National Weather Center, located at the University of Oklahoma's Norman campus since 1980, was originally established in New Orleans in 1935. The university is home to several first-class museums including the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History, both on the OU campus; as well as a branch museum known as "the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum" (formerly known as "Sammy") which opened downtown in 2002 and focuses on natural history from prehistoric times to statehood. The school also has an extensive collection of paintings by artist Jim Harolds who taught for over 30 years until his retirement in 2009.
