Youngstown is located at (41.064, −80.977). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The Mahoning River flows through Youngstown; it was originally named "Mahoning" by its Native American inhabitants because it flowed west to east from Lake Erie toward its confluence with the Ohio River in what would become downtown Youngstown near present-day Eastwood Mall and Interstate 680 (Ohio Turnpike). The city lies within two major watersheds: that of the Mahoning River, which flows into Lake Erie via Western New York state as well as Pennsylvania; and that of Beaver Creek, a tributary flowing northward into western Pennsylvania's Connoquenessing Creek before reaching Lake Erie at Waterford Township approximately 10 miles south-southwest from downtown Youngstown.
