The city was named after the French word for "red". It is best known as the home of a major Amish community. Vermilion has been designated an All-America City three times, in 1956, 1977 and 1993. Vermilion is located at (41.478050, -82.965983). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and is water; this includes Lake Erie on its western border with Erie County's Fairview Park Township and Bay Village Township's Marblehead Peninsula that juts into Lake Erie from Vermilion's eastern shoreline along State Route 2/U.
