Toledo has won the All-America City Award, given annually by the National Civic League. It was named one of the 10 best cities in America for young people by "Time" magazine in 2006; ranked as one of America's most literate cities; and is a member of both the Tree City USA club and The Arbor Day Foundation. In 2009, Toledo was chosen to host U.S. President Barack Obama's speech on health care reform—the first time a sitting president addressed Congress from a city outside Washington D.C..
