The city was founded in 1805 by Ephraim Quinby. It is named for Charles Kettering, inventor of the automobile self-starter and founder of Delco Electronics (now known as Delphi Automotive). Kettering is home to the Dayton Dragons, a minor league baseball team that plays at Fifth Third Field. The Dayton Gems were an International Basketball League team based in Kettering from 2001 until 2003 when they became defunct due to financial problems and poor attendance figures. They played their games at Cooper Stadium on the campus of Fairmont High School; however, most home games were played at Hara Arena on Wright State University's campus because Cooper Stadium did not have enough seating capacity for IBL standards or lights necessary for night play.
