Cincinnati is known for its historic architecture. The original surveyor, John Filson, named it "Losantiville". Subsequent spelling modifications included "Lousiville" and "Cincinnatti". In 1819 the name was shortened to Cincinnati. It has been called the City of Seven Hills as a reference to seven prominent hills in the city: Fountain Square; Government Hill (now Mt Adams); Mt Auburn; Mt Airy (originally called Columbia Heights); Brown's Hill; Fort Washington Hill; and Price Hill. The region experienced an economic boom in the early decades of the 19th century due to a rise in manufacturing all over America, especially Ohio.
