It is part of the Cleveland-Elyria Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1805 and named after the River Avon in Scotland by a Scottish settler who envisioned building a mill there. Avon was originally called "Newark", but when it was discovered that another Newark already existed, it was renamed after the river Avon near Aberdeen, Scotland. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.
